Readings- Stuart Hall Page 43

What is the preferred reading of ‘Humans’?
The TV programme ‘humans’ is based in a reality like our own however involves robots called ‘synths’.  It shows how humans depend on these ‘synths’ to do every day work for the humans giving viewers an insight to the development in artificial intelligence that could happen. I think the preferred reading is that ‘synths’ shouldn’t be developed as they could pose a threat scaring people.

How is this encoded?
The preferred meaning is encoded when in the first episode when Anita takes Sophie from her bed in the first episode which is scary for parents viewing the show. It is suggested that unhealthy emotional attachments may be developed shown between Odi and George.

What other readings might this text generate?
Another reading that might be generated is dominant this is a more positive outlook on the program where the reader may hope that Anita and Joe will meet and that she will escape as well as Odi being ok to look after George and all the conscious synth escape giving them the idea that Artificial Intelligence is real. A feminist audience may react negatively, reading the fact that Anita is a pretty woman that’s being sold as a product and objectified may cause bad opinions of ‘Humans’.
